The art of Architectural Photography involves an eye for detail and composition, an understanding and appreciation of architecture and a thorough knowledge of cameras, lighting, film and digital capture.  Any structure can be photographed from an infinite number of angles and lighting combinations, it is the architectural photographers job to select the angles and lighting that show the project in the most interesting way.

Interiors always benefit from additional lighting, it is our goal to make the lighting look natural in combination with the ambient lighting.  Depending on the existing lighting in the space we may use strobe or tungsten lighting to supplement the existing light already present in the space.  The use of shadow and highlights are critical to a successful photograph.   We are extremely picky about the exact placement of all the elements within a space.

Miles Wolf has over 20 years experience working with a large format 4x5 camera, this format produces extremely sharp enlargements, or very high res scans that could be as large as 500 megabytes. The 4x5 camera also enables the photographer to correct perspectives and to change the plane of focus. These skills of working with a 4x5 camera can produce some excellent results.  We have made 40x60 display prints that are extremely sharp and clear.  Clarity and resolution are the major advantages over digital capture.

Digital capture is our primary way of photographing architecture.  We use a Nikon digital camera to capture direct digital files which can be used for a number of applications such as; : web sites, brochures, competition entries, display prints, and portfolio prints.  A big advantage of digital capture is that it eliminates the need to scan the film to produce a digital file.  Once you have a digital file you can do some incredible things in Photoshop.  With the software,  Photoshop, we can control color, or lightness and darkness of the overall image or of selected areas within the photograph.  Another use of Photoshop is in retouching photographs, we regularly remove exit signs, parking signs, flaws in painted walls, reflections in glass, damaged furniture or wood trim.  Please keep in mind that we can scan film and achieve the same results, or superior results than with traditional digital capture using digital cameras.

We continue to use both formats depending on the needs of our clients.  The trend is definitely going toward digital, but sometimes the better result is obtained with film.  We are prepared to use whichever format that would best document your important projects.
